ARCH 172: Vehicle Gizmo
The “Tortulgae” is a bio-inspired watercraft designed to restore ecological balance within aquatic environment of the Kankakee Marsh affected by excessive algal growth. By removing surface algae, the Tortulgae helps prevent oxygen depletion and the spread of harmful toxins that threaten aquatic ecosystems. More than a machine, the Tortulgae symbolizes the intersection of design, ecology, and empathy serving as a small-scale intervention with a large-scale environmental impact.
Drawing from the slow, deliberate movements of the turtle, the Tortulgae glides across the water’s surface, slicing through layers of algae with precision. Its retractable fins open to redirect and collect loose algae into an integrated container positioned above the hull. The topographical texture of the shell encourages people and wildlife alike to climb and interact with the vehicle. Operated by a single rider, the vehicle allows for full manual control over steering and fin movement, merging human agency with environmental remediation.
